Consumer Trends: Buying Local & Fair Trade

October is Fair Trade month! To learn more about fair trade and how it helps fight human trafficking, check out some of our blog posts from this year on the subject. Today, I got an email from Ethical Ocean (where you can find some of our tees and other ethical merchandise!) that included this infographic on two consumer trends: buying local and fair trade. I though it was great information and I wanted to pass it along.

In addition to fair trade, buying local is also a good way to take a small step in helping to make sure that what you buy is slave-free. Of course, there’s no way to guarantee it, but local organizations and companies whose facilities are also local have a much shorter and more visible supply chain so there’s less risk of exploitation along the way. Just another reason to buy local when you can!

Excellent points. For the most part, it seems as if the items we can buy locally are not the same ones that are grown by fair trade principles to be imported. Now if Hershey ever starts making chocolate locally, we may have a competitive moral dilemma…
