Give Hope to Cambodia Through Hagar International

Read previous posts about Cambodia, the Khmer Rouge, and what everyday abolitionist can do to help heal Cambodia.

Our partner organization Hagar International works extensively with exploited women and children in Cambodia. Here’s how their website summarizes the conditions of Cambodia and the work they do there:

Today, most Cambodians live in extreme poverty, with more than 77 percent of the population earning less than $2 a day. Women and children disproportionately bear the burden of intermittent employment and limited access to health and education services.

Sexual and domestic violence are also realities within Cambodian society. Extreme poverty, low levels of literacy, gender inequities, alcoholism, and a history of civil war are all contributing factors. Cambodia also experiences significant internal and cross-border trafficking, being a country of origin, transit, and destination for victims of human trafficking.

Despite such deeply embedded violence and hopelessness, Hagar is at work to break those cycles and offer new avenues of freedom. In Cambodia, Hagar programs restore hope and dignity to women and children from very dark places.

Hagar works to provide for physical safety, education, emotional healing, and spiritual rejuvenation.

They have a great variety of videos on YouTube that highlight the life-changing work they do (my favorite is below). Become a fan on Facebook to get continual updates.

When you give to Hagar, this is the impact your gift has on the lives of survivors:

  • $25     Books and materials to teach one woman to read.
$50     Intensive counseling services for one month.
$100    One week’s care for a woman at Hagar Women’s Shelter.
    $250    One teacher’s monthly salary.
$500   Three months’ training program to prepare one woman for sustainable employment.

You can read survivor stories here.

If you’re in Cincinnati, come to RESTORE, our benefit for Hagar. If you want to support Hagar and can’t come to the show, you can donate to Hagar online and put RESTORE in the comments on the donation page.
